Mainlandrover was established in Christchurch in 2002 by Graham West to act as the exclusive agent for Scorpion Racing and other UK sourced products.
The name was derived from the term often given to the South island of New Zealand of Mainland.

Today Mainlandrover is owned by NZWC Limited and is based in the North Island, more specifically East Tamaki, Auckland. Graham West still occasionally helps out due to his past experiences.

Scorpion Racing has the scorpion as their logo but instead of using that Mainlandrover required something similar in style but also an icon that was indicative of New Zealand, hence the choice of the Giant New Zealand Weta.
